Facoltà di Filosofia
Sapienza Università di Roma

The Faculty of Philosophy (University of Rome 'La Sapienza') is located in a beautiful residence built up in the center of Rome at the end of nineteenth century. The Faculty is known to be the ancientest Faculty of Philosophy in Italy, gives home to nearly 2,000 students and it is served by 300 faculty members and staff. It is nationally known for more than 100 programs of study, and supports a wide variety of research in every branch of philosophy.

Attracting both national and international students, while providing high value added services to the current student population, the Faculty needed a flexible tool to address the needs of a large web surfing population with different levels of web surfing skills.

Due to Faculty organizational problems caused by extensive directory services organized in separate domains, communicating efficiently was a real problem in term of time and coherence.

There are a number of misconceptions about the subject 'philosophy', both money and employment are uncertain these days, and every student will certainly feel the pressure to study something that guarantees a job at the end of it. But what is a 'vocational subject'? Because patterns of employment are changing so fast, what employs people today may be a dying industry in a few years' time. What are really valuable are 'key/transferable skills', i.e. skills that are applicable to a wide range of situations and which enable students to develop new skills. Studies indicate that philosophy graduates are just as able to get jobs as other graduates, and the kinds of employment entered into are interesting and highly various.

In making the web site the main source to diffuse infomations we helped promote Faculty activities and Faculty itself as future-oriented thinking as far from old-fashioned approach.
Thus, after evaluating several solutions, everyone have agreed in creating a really simple cross-browser website, easy to navigate and fast to download without losing the design quality.
For providing smooth information transactions we recognized that it was easier to manage sensible data locally and designed its databases accordingly so that the system could have to be easily modified and expanded for use in a variety of content areas.
